Five on Friday

The Cat's here to tell you it's time join up with Amy at Love Made My Home for Five on Friday.  And why a watch?  Because this week my Five are some of the clocks we've collected through the years.

The First is a German Wall Clock that we bought when we were living in Bad Kreuznach, West Germany---a country that no longer exists.  In fact all of the clocks are German.  This style is sometimes called a German striking  clock. No idea as to its age, would guess turn of the century around 1900-1920.

My Second clock is  sits on our desk.  Again, no idea as to age, perhaps a bit older than the first clock, so 1880-1900.

My Third clock is a "gold" mantel clock in the French style, but it too is German.  It originally had a black wooden stand it sat on and a glass dome, both of which have been lost or broken through the years we've had it.  He should be holding a long rifle in his hand and it's around here somewhere.  It's about the same age as the second one.

The Fourth clock is a Cuckoo clock.  I know it doesn't particularly look like one.  It is wooden with a pewter dial.  It has a wooden pendulum, but it's put up somewhere.  It's quite old, maybe mid-1800's.

My Fifth clock is our Grandfather clock and it stands at the foot of the stairs.  It's an open-well Grandfather and probably dates from the late 1800's to early 1900's.

Do we run the clocks?  No, too noisy, too much trouble, too lazy.  Though each year I ask Mac to get the Grandfather clock going and he always agrees to and always forgets.  But that's ok, I know what time it is, the cat tells me.

  1. What an amazing collection of clocks you have!! I especially like the cuckoo clock, that one is really fabulous. I think it is good you don't have them all going, it would get a bit "ticky" and "bongy" otherwise! Thank you for joining Five On Friday, happy weekend! xx

  4. My grandfather was a watch and clock man. Mom said they survived the depression because people paid a dime to have their alarm clocks repaired in order to get up to go to any job they had, or to look for one. During the war the army picked him to make a very new concept in large quantities: time recorders. I still have the milling machine in the basement the army gave him, and one employee turned out precision parts every day of the war.
PS--my grandfather was second generation German, but escaped the general anti-German sentiment of the war because of all those alarm clocks he fixed for a dime.

  5. Your lovely clocks add beauty to your home. Glad to hear you don't bother to have them going. That would be a little too much wouldn't it?

  7. What a beautiful collection of old clocks you have Janet! I don't like seeing clocks that aren't working (I have one), they seem like they have no purpose anymore. I do hope Mac can get the grandfather clock working again ... such a beauty! It looks massive with the tiny doll's chair beside it.

  10. Love the clocks, I've always been a fan of clocks but most of the ones I own are digital and they're not the same as a 'proper' clock. My sister owns a big wooden wall clock, it could be German after looking at yours, it's the same sort of style, but to keep it going she has to hang it on an lean otherwise it stops.

  16. What an incredible collection you have. Wonderful share. The first reminds me of one in my MIL house. I think it came from Austria or Romania.

  17. Great collection of clocks. They remind me of the tick tock of the clock in my grandmother's house and the german clock at my parents' home, not a cuckoo but a weather clock - the lady in sun hat came out in good weather and the man with his raincoat and umbrella if it was wet. Have a good weekend:)
