Happy St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!  Savannah hosts the 3rd largest St. Patrick's Day celebration in the world.  This year there are thunderstorms in the area, but I doubt that will slow people down much.  We went out to breakfast and saw some of the annual parade on tv.  Up to 30,000 people were expected to view the parade and close to 400,000 people descend on Savannah for the celebrations. It will be going on through Sunday.
It all starts before the big day with the greening of the fountain in Forsyth Park and the Irish Festival--Tara Feis held a few days before.
This celebration has been going on for 190 years, with a few breaks.  Parts, like the Irish Festival are family orientated and some are just an excuse to get drunk.
We stay out of Savannah and usually go somewhere this time of year, crowds are not our thing and drunk crowds ever less so.  But I'm a bit Irish on the maternal side, we're from the poor branch of the Kennedys.  So Erin Go Bragh.

  1. Happy St. Patrick's day, Mac n' Janet! I laughed when you said you were from the 'poor' branch of the Kennedy's! I grew up in Mass. and we used to drive by the 'Kennedy Compound' sometimes. It was really quite small and humble by today's standards. Love the green fountain, but yes, drunk crowds are no fun! As I get older, I try to avoid crowds anymore. Unless it is a flea market :) Have a fun day and Erin go bragh! xx Karen

  2. Happy St Patrick's Day to ya! We are staying far away from Savannah today! We did go see the green fountains and things set up along the river a few days ahead of time last year though and that was fun.

  6. The 3rd biggest parade ! wow that is wonderful.
I too stay out of masses of people. It is just to hard for me to get around.
But it is a fun day possibly (?) and one day when we can all be Irish !

    cheers, parsnip

  7. Despite actually being Irish, I didn't do anything to mark the day. It's not so big in England, but I don't think it's any deliberate prejudice as St George's day is also generally ignored. This celebration looks like good fun.
