Learning New Words

I learned a new word yesterday at John Edward's blog Rambles From My Chair where he had written a list of words that were new to him.  Well most of them were new to me too, but the very first one struck a chord with me:

Consecotaleohobia  (n)
Fear of using chopsticks..

I had never thought about it, but I probably do have a fear of chopsticks, because I certainly have a fear of eating strange or even just new foods. I'm such a food phobe that I wouldn't even eat rice for years.  The list of things I won't eat would fill a book.

What's the connection with chopstick fear?  Well we're going to Japan later this year and finding food I'll be willing to even taste worries me.  Our daughter, who will pretty much eat anything, including whale tongue--and I told her she'd better not do that again--says that there will be lots for me to eat, with a fork. She frequently goes to a cafe named Brooklyn for hamburgers, with her  they might be made of Kangaroo for all I know, though she says they do have beef.

I don't want you to think I'm a big sissy, I  will try new experiences, it's just food I'm not willing to compromise on.

  1. I am about to try making two things that I have never made before, but they are made with ingredients that I know I will like, nothing remotely like whale tongue which I too would not be keen on trying - I have now learnt a new word too - Consecotaleohobia, but whether I remember it or not is another matter.

  2. I see that your daughter and I have the same very easy answer for this fear. Just poke it with a fork! Don't eat whale tongue though!!

  3. Don't eat anything sold on a street cart on a stick. In restaurants you will be ok. Don't worry, just have fun.

  4. I am still so sad that you will not try the food and are afraid of it. The fish is so good .They have the best pork and beef I have ever eaten . Fresh ramen with slow cooked pork and broth. Grilled meat at a Yakiniku. It is so good. But like I have said before the Bakery's have the best bread in their sandwiches with ham and cheese, tuna salad, egg salad. Just more "American" styled food. You will not starve but I am sad that you will not eat the food.
Okonomiyaki, a savory pancake filled with what you pick, Yakisoba noodles with veggies and meat or shrimp, Teppanyaki, Ramen, Onigiri filled rice balls, Tonkatsu a fried pork cutlet, Donburi rice bowl with meat or fish over rice.
But here is a dish that you will like korokke related to the french croquette deep fried potato cake rolled in panko. So good !
Do Not Worry you will have food to eat.

    cheers, parsnip

    1. Parsnip, I know I'll be fine, I'm not afraid of the food in Japan, sometimes I'm just a bit of a sticks-the-mud about food. I'm sure the fish is great, I'm just no a fan of fish anywhere, shrimp yes, crab yes, even fried oysters, but not fish. My husband is like our daughter and will eat most things so we'll be fine. I'm really not worried about Japan, I'm actually worried about Cambodia, we're going there too.

  5. I love trying new things. You never know if you're going to find the dish of your dreams unless you give it a go.

  8. What fun to travel to Japan! Your food dislikes reminds me of my dear son in law. There are so many things he's never tried because he thinks he doesn't like them. Yet, my little grandson eats everything including escargot which are his favorite! Happy Mothers Day. Hugs, Pat

  9. I'm sure you're looking forward to going to Japan later in the year. Japanese cuisine is different, as I know from my friendship group, but trying new food is part of the enjoyment of the trip there. I like the new painting. The sheep and dog coming towards the viewer makes it interesting and endearing. Have a lovely weekend.
