Five on Friday

Time to join Amy at Love Made My Home and all the other bloggers for the first Friday in September.  We took the month of August off, but now it's time to get going again, so follow the link and see what everyone has for the first Friday.

My first has to start with Tropical Storm Hermine.  She came ashore last night in Florida as a category 1 hurricane, but now she's down-graded.  Our rain started last night about 8 pm and we had intermittent rain, thunder and wind all night.  The main part of the storm is staying west of us, but it continues to rain and the wind to blow.  We're under a tornado watch until 4 pm.

We have a table and chair set on the back deck and we probably should have taken the umbrella down, but we forgot.  It's done ok, but one of the pillows in the chair has blown into the pool.  They're made with outdoor fabric, so I'm hoping it will dry out ok.
Poor Pillow

As I was typing this I heard a thud.  Mac said a branch blew off a tree on the side of the house and blew across the deck.  Glad it wasn't any bigger.
Lots more small ones down in the yard.  Most of our trees are pretty healthy, thank goodness.

The driveway is littered with small branches, but even small branches can hurt if they hit you in the head, so we did not do our morning work and I'm off to do some indoor walking.

To keep myself entertained I'm going to be working on some Christmas presents.  No photos because they're a gift.  I ordered a cross stitch kit and requested one that was printed on the fabric.  That's not what I got.  Instead I am instructed to find the square in the middle of my material and start there.  The diagrams to work from are large and once I get going I think other than going blind from the tiny stitches I ought to be ok.  Does everyone start in the middle of their cross stitch?

That's my five, hope you have a good weekend.

Whoops, just as I went to post this our electricity went out for 3 hours, just came back on.  Boy was it hot and stuffy.

  2. Indoor walking sounds the best option in that storm. It's good that you have things to do indoors - stay safe:)

  3. Stay safe, hope it doesn't last too long. I think you're supposed to start in the centre of a cross stitch design if you're able but the Joyful World SAL I've joined in with releases the pattern bit by bit so it hasn't been possible to start in the centre with that.

  4. That branch landed in just the right spot without harming anyone. Good thing too. As far as cross stitch, I use to do it long ago, but don't recall if I knew to start in the middle or not. Self taught equals bad practices no doubt!

  5. It's good to hear the storm was downgraded but still it's scary I'm sure. Reminds me of the horrific wind storms we used to have when I lived in Gig Harbor. The house shook with the wind gusts and we used to take refuge downstairs. Stay safe dear friend and happy stitching! Hugs, Pat

  6. After living for fifteen years in "Tornado Alley" south of Kansas City, MO, I can appreciate the tension you feel from the stormy weather you experience! I am glad you and yours are safe thus far in the latest storm to blow your way. I have done very little cross stitching, but can remember at least once attempting to start in the middle of the piece. I hope you enjoy making your current projects. xx

  7. Glad that the storm was downgraded - it sounds as if it was quite bad enough as it was.

  8. Scary times in hurricane season but glad you've weathered this one.
I find it so hard to start in the middle and often get it off centre so I have to tweak!
    Have a great weekend!

  9. Yes all the crossstitch pieces I have worked on have started in the middle! Stay safe and I hope your power stays on! :)

  10. Glad you and your home are safe from the storm. I worked on one cross-stitch project years ago, and it too started from the centre.

  11. I recently took an old cross stitch out of its frame and found one of those start in the middle from years ago. Knowing everything, even way back then, I carefully counted threads, and started in the lower left, when you always start! I did top to bottom OK, but missed left and right, big time. The right hand border was possible six threads wide. I won't tell you what I did to make it look good, and then hid the evidence under a frame all those years. Perhaps you should begin in the middle.

  12. We need rain so badly and can you believe it, we didn't get one drop of it. It was dark today and a bit cooler but that was it for us. Glad you are okay, I thought about you. xx

  13. Stay safe. Hope the storm leaves you soon. I always start in the middle with my cross stitches to make sure it's going to fit on the material.

  14. Thinking of you. Hope the storm calms down soon. It looks as if there will be lots to clear up outside, but for now glad you're occupied with things to do indoors. Stay safe.

  15. Hope the storm has calmed down by now. Good that you are staying inside safe. Good luck with your cross stitch. Don't think I always start in the middle! Hope you have a better weekend weather wise. B x

  16. I've only completed one cross stitch and it took me 15 years, so I am afraid I am no help. Storms can be very scary, so pleased to hear it has not been too bad for yourselves so far - stay safe.

  18. That's awful when storms are blowing around the house ! We once had 2 trees which fell on the street ! Ever since I am a little scared when heavy storms are announced.

  19. Glad that you are missing the full force of the storm. Cross stitch - I never start in the middle, I do a bit of counting and measuring then start at the top and work my way down.

  20. I hope all is safe and the weather is calming down now, take care. I was taught to start cross stitch in the middle but that doesn't always mean I do it!

  21. I, too, was taught to cross stitch from the middle. But I decided that cross stitch was too fiddly for me. I like embroidery much better.
I read your latest post (Saturday's) and am happy that the storm didn't do much damage in your area. These storms are so unpredictable sometimes. Happy Weekend.

  22. So happy you didn't have major damage. Clean up is no fun, but better than damage.

I don't start in the middle of cross stitch, because I could never have the patience to do that kind of work. I admire those of you who can do it, and love seeing the results. Hope we'll get to see photos of your gifts after Christmas.

  23. I read your next post so know you are ok after the horrid storm, but I hope you get things cleared up soon. It sounds like a very nasty start to storm season. As for cross stitch, if it is printed I start top left, if it is counted I start in the middle(ish!). It is most unlike me because I don't usually follow "rules"!! Enjoy! Thank you for joining in, have a great weekend! xx

  24. We have lived in the path of both hurricanes and tornadoes at different times, and all that preparation and worry is exhausting! Glad your place came through ok.

  25. Oh my. I can't imagine knowing that something like that is on its way. I would be so scared! I hope you are recovering by now and the worst is well and truly over.

  26. Oh my goodness ...
Hope you can get things cleared up and sorted soon.

    All the best Jan

  27. I'm not sure what scares me more - tornadoes or hurricanes. Luckily, so far I haven't experienced either. Our power went out for a bit, but it was while I was at work.

  28. I usually start in the middle of my cross stitch. But how snoring you did not receive that which you had ordered
