Five on Friday

It's a lovely Autumn day and it's time to join Amy at Love Made My Home for Five on Friday.
The trouble with our DirecTV has corrected itself.  Karen at Beatrice Euphemie  suggested that we'd had solar storms lately and that might have been the problem, she was more helpful than DirecTV.  And there's no place to e-mail them and tell them how sad their customer service is.

Anyway, my five, in no particular order.

First:  I awoke the other morning to hear an owl hoo-hoo-hooing in a nearby tree, this was following by the crackling of crows trying to drive it away.  I often wonder why crows harass birds of prey, and this act is called mobbing, and the short answer is because owls and other birds of prey eat crows.  When we got up the noise was still going on, though it was obvious the owl was in a nearby tree we couldn't spot it until the crows flushed it out.  Mac said it was a Barred Owl.  We didn't get a picture, but I borrowed one from the net.

Second:
Our decorations for Halloween.

Don't you just love the fallen tree, we have a 'wild" spot between our house and the neighbors and we left the fallen tree where it fell.

Third:  One of our neighbors always has a spooktacular display.

Love his three witches

Fourth:  Our little pumpkin.  What with pumpkins costing a freaking fortune this year we settled on one small one for Mac to put holes in.

Fifth:  Sad, but true, I started wrapping Christmas presents today.

That's my five, hope you have a great weekend.

  1. How wonderful that you have started to wrap presents for Christmas, I have every intention of making a start. I don't like the stress of it all nearer the time. Your Halloween displays look impressive. To be honest we haven't bothered at all this year. Have a great weekend.

  4. What a super five on Friday, I enjoyed them all.

I have now started some Christmas shopping but not wrapping - I hope to start wrapping soon, it's always easier to do it as you go along isn't it.

    Good wishes for the weekend

    All the best Jan

  5. I enjoyed all five! Those owls are so cute. There is something about crows and turkeys too. Poppy turkey hunts in the spring and has told me something about hearing crows means there is a turkey nearby?? I'll have to ask him again. I love those three witches.

  6. My comment didn't publish again.
I really don't like crows or ravens much to mean especially in a group they are bullies. Don't tell call them a "murder of crows" ?
No decorations up for me (especially now) but also no trick or treaters. Walking up my hill is just not worth it.
What Christmas shopping I have to do is done but not wrapped. The made gifts are still being worked on.

    cheers, parsnip

  7. Oh my gosh, how can you be wrapping Christmas presents? I can't bear to hear the word until December 15th and even then I struggle with it (December has been a particularly cruel month for our family, hard to grasp "Christmas spirit" with all we've dealt with in the month).

I've seen lots of Halloween decorations here in the neighborhoods I've driven in. So festive!

  10. Love the witches 'When shall we three meet again?' so far towards Christmas I've bought 2 packs of cards. We see crows mobbing buzzards around here they make so much noise as they do it:)

  19. I love owls, they have the same eyes as my cat Rosie ! People don't decorate for Halloween here in Belgium or only a few. In my area there is nothing at all ! I am not even thinking of Christmas and you are already wrapping gifts ??

  20. We don't really celebrate Halloween the American way with all those kinds of decorations, some of it has crept in here too but on the whole I'd say it's still more of a solemn holiday here, with caring for the graves of our loved ones and lighting candles. And we celebrate it next weekend, not this one!

  21. you are all ready for Halloween. I love owls and most mornings i hear the screech owls "talking" to each other. I'm wrapping birthday presents ... one after the other until early December. When those are all done, I'll think about Christmas!

  25. I think it's wonderful you started wrapping Christmas presents. You're going to be so organized, which makes it a lot easier to enjoy the holiday season. I love the owl. We've been hearing them who who whooing too!
