Life's Little Pings

We needed to have a bunch of junk hauled off including our old pool.  Our friend who usually does this has just had surgery, so I hit the internet and it was hard to find anyone, but I finally did and they came out quickly, quoted a high price, we sighed and said ok.  It's gone, but ouch.  They even said why didn't we try Craig's List.  Well there have been a few serious, including murders, involving Craig's List so we don't use it.  We want someone reputable even if they're expensive.
Now we need the gutters on the front of the house cleaned, there are things, trees?, growing there.  Ours is a 2 story house so I didn't want Mac even thinking about doing it---he said he could lean out a second story window and get most to it---NO, NO, No.  So back to the internet, asked  all our neighbors--who all said if we find someone to tell them--, and one of our neighbors who's having their house painted said the painter does stuff like that.  In the meantime I found a company who would do it for a reasonable price, but couldn't come for nearly 2 weeks.  So Mac asked the painter, who dropped by today and quote $250, no way!  So we've left a message with the other company and hope they call us back.
So this morning  I'm cleaning house---boring--- and plotting tomorrow's Father Day dinner, Mac has requested Paella.
I've been reading Broadchurch, a book written from the British tv series.  I would have enjoyed watching that, but it's not Mac's kind of show, so I was pleased to find the book.  I'm about 3/4's of the way through it and I'm really enjoying it.  I have an idea of who did it, but I'm not sure.  Good book.

  1. Getting someone to do those odd menial chores that we can't do, is getting nuts. They have us by the short hairs and they know it. They charge outlandish prices and come if and when they want to. Sigh!

  2. We always had gutter guards. Sort of expensive, but peace of mind.

  3. In Broadchurch I know who did it!!!
I am trying to get a shower replaced, and it is a nightmare to find someone really good and also someone who actually shows up - don't they want the work?

  4. It seems to be a worldwide problem getting smaller jobs done and then having to pay over the odds.

  5. It really does seem that good repair people are hard to find. We had a walkway replaced and the back patio doubled by a wonderful cement guy about three years ago. Last Feb I contacted him and he quoted a good price. He said he would be here 24 March approximately. We have since set 4 different start dates approximately and still hasn't shown up! Guess I'll move on to someone else.

  6. All those irritating little jobs come at once. It's great when you can find someone who doesn't cost a fortune. We tend to ask our builder for recommendations these days. He's a very funny man, short and always wears shorts even in the coldest weather. Good luck with the gutter. B x

  7. This is a subject that annoys me immensely. What happened to the odd-job men who regularly knocked on our doors, who didn't charge over the odds. Even neighbours were more obliging in days gone by, now we're all in the same boat.

  8. THere is so much upkeep with a house. $250 sounds awfully high to clean gutters. I listened to that book in my car and really enjoyed it.

  9. I watched Broadchurch on Netflix and loved it! I won't give anything away. I do hope you find someone. My husband does 99% of the jobs around here, but even he is going to get someone to replace eves troughs around part of our big old house. -Jenn

  10. We have been fortunate in getting recommendations from neighbors. There are always guys coming around in rickety old vehicles wanting to do things like that but we are always afraid they aren't sober and will fall off the ladder! Seriously. It seems if we don't have a name to mention it will be weeks before they come but if we mention so-and-so recommended you, things happen.

  11. If you find good workers hold onto them!
They are often quite hard to find.

Glad you are enjoying your Broadchurch read.

    All the best Jan

  12. Seems as long as we own a home that there are endless things to do. Guess it's the nature of the beast! Have a good week!

  13. I have been dishing out money left and right lately. Had plumbers here three times, furnace, pest control, garage door, carpet cleaner, ... It never ends with a house.

  14. These days you are really lucky if you find someone good who also shows up. My boss had to have his floors at home replaced and the tile guy didn't even show up at all on the first day.
