Just Some Random Thoughts On Thursday

I didn't post anything yesterday, my only excuse is that it was 98º here yesterday with a heat index, what it actually felt like, of 110º.  The brain melts at those kinds of temperatures.
More about why my optometrist annoyed me.  I see my retina specialist 4 times a year and that's 50 miles round trip each time, and it's 16 miles round trip to my optometrist.  When the "trial" contact comes in I have to go in, try it on and then if we're all pleased, and I have been pleased with these contacts for 14 years, then they'll order me 2 boxes and I can then make another 16 mile round trip to pick them up when they come in.  They aren't charging me for the extra visit, but I'd pay them not to have to go because between the Retina Specialist and the optometrist that's nearly 250 miles in visits for my eyes.  I have to see the Specialist, this other just feels like harassment, I wouldn't even go for the initial visit if state law didn't requirement it.  But enough of me complaining.
People often ask how I can read 3 or more books at a time, they say they would get confused.  Generally I read books that are so different that it would be impossible to confuse them. Right now I'm very slowly working my way through Skippy Dies (reading only a few pages a day) , it's about boys in an Irish boys school.  The main book I'm reading is Chasing Shadows an Inspector Ian Rutledge mystery.  He's a Scotland Yard detective who is haunted by the man he had executed during WWI.  I'm also reading Brideshead Revisited.   No way to confuse those 3 stories. I'm also slowly working my way through the 3rd volume of the Winston Churchill biography--this volume isn't as good as the first 2 and it's taking much longer.
We've been rewatching a bunch of Midsomer Murders and we got to an old favorite, The Black Book.  It's about the forgery of some paintings.  When we first watched it Mac was inspired to paint a picture that sort of went with it.  Barnaby was able to detect it was a forgery because the line cast was wrong.

Today it's fish and coleslaw for lunch.  Salmon for Mac and some kind of fish baked in the oven for me.  My main requirement for fish is that it doesn't particularly taste much like fish.

Wherever you are stay cool or dry or warm.

  1. Oh, Janet. I've read Brideshead Revisited and Churchill. And they have left my head, and today remembering that doesn't bother me at all. I have not read Skippy Dies, and am wondering if what the title implies is true, in which case I won't open it. Have a good weekend.

  2. We had fish pie for tea, vegan so it didn't contain any fish. It was ghastly and ended up in the bin.

  3. Fish that doesn't taste like fish, I understand. Not into fishy either.
When I used to read, I read a book clear through, usually in a day or less. (Unless it got stuck in the mud, then I would move on)
The heat is back again, thought we might get a cool August. Sigh.

  4. Before my brain and eye problems I read 3 books at once. One in the car for drops off and waiting, then one in the family room and bedroom. Now I read one slowly.

  5. I'm with you on the taste of fish...that's why I love fish sticks with gobs of tartar sauce. You're amazing with your book reading.

  6. I am like you- I read 3 (sometimes 4) books at a time- a sitting room book, a bedroom book, a car book and sometimes a workroom book. I love to read and have finally been able to get back at it a bit.

Yeah- me and fish---not such good friends. lol xo Diana

  7. I usually get so engrossed in one book, it would be hard to start reading or continue reading something else until I'm done with that tone. I like fish; just with our crazy work schedules and then weekend schedules watching grandkids or having family over for dinner, fish is usually not on our menu. Might have to rectify that somehow.

  8. I understand what you mean about fishy fish. As you know, fish and chips is one of our traditional dishes, but I always think the ones you buy from the seaside taste far more fishy than others, perhaps because they're fresher, I don't know.

  9. I have read Chasing Shadows but couldn't read more than one book at a time. Curious about the state requirement to see the specialist.

  10. How aggravating about your optometrist. That is so much travel. The last time I bought glasses and had the eye examination I paid the extra money so I could also be fitted for contact lenses. After the exam, they gave me two boxes of disposable, contact lenses and I was to decide which was best. They both seemed fine to me. The contact lenses got put on the back burner, when a string of health and family issues came up. Time had passed, I don't remember how long now, a couple of months, maybe, and when I called to tell them what lenses I had decided on, I found out I had waited too long and would have to pay for another eye exam for contact lenses. I told them to forget about it, I wouldn't be coming in for another contact lens examination. My eyes don't change that fast, I guess it is a state rule here in Missouri. I wore the contacts I received as testers while they lasted. Now I just wear my glasses. Maybe some other time I'll try for contacts again. Money wasted, lesson learned.

I like un-fishy fish, too. I like salmon with a soy, ginger sauce to cover up the fish flavor.

  12. I can understand reading several books at the same time - it's like watching several TV shows each week. You don't get confused.

A friend of mine has a blind daughter - she reads Braille books at the same time. Literally at THE SAME TIME - one book with her left hand, the other with her right. Now THAT I can't understand!
