Thor Spoke

Yes, Thor spoke and instead of an eclipse we had a thunder storm.  We were up in town and poor kids were standing around with their special glasses looking in vain for an eclipse.  What they got was thick cloud cover.  I hadn't planned on watching it except on tv, but if I'd been a child with all the hype about it I'd have been bitterly disappointed.  Oh well,  they only have to wait till 2045 for the next total eclipse here in the States.  If you can't wait that long I read that there's a total eclipse every 18 months somewhere in the world and the next one will be on July 2, 2019 and will be visible across Chile and Argentina.  Here's a map I "borrowed" from somewhere on the Net (Vox.com).  That's pretty interesting.
I've seen some partials that were pretty cool, but I was too lazy to even look into getting glasses for this one.  I guess the thrill is gone and considering how the weather turned out here it's just as well.

  1. I suppose that was a big disappointment. Were you in the total darkness area? Did it get darker? Think that would have soured me on it too.

  2. We had one a few years ago. Same happened, thick cloud cover. I see dear Mr Trump looked straight at the eclipse without eye protection. Says everything lol! B x

  3. We were on holiday in Cornwall when we had a total eclipse in August 1999. My children were 5 and 3 at the time and watching the eclipse on TV live from Oregon brought all the excitement back!

  4. That's such a shame. I watched it on TV and it looked amazing.

  5. I missed it myself as I was at work, but still think it was so exciting.

  6. It was so lovely in so many places. Well, the kids can say it was the one they missed.

  8. Our weather wasn't very good, but I'm glad we stuck it out and got a few minutes of eclipse view. We were pretty excited!

  9. Yes, I think that Bettina is right above...it is on April 8, 2024.
Oddly enough, my sister's birthday was yesterday and she looked it up and the next one is that date I gave you, which is her son's birthday! They plan on going to Texas to see it!

  10. That's a shame.
Many in the UK were disappointed not to see a partial eclipse.
I think TV may have been the best option.

    All the best Jan

  11. Most of the future dates that you show are way into the future and I doubt that I will be around. I saw a partial eclipse a couple of years ago which was clear and good. Our total eclipse a few years ago was cloudy and disappointing, but the atmosphere was very eerie, the birds flew into the trees to roost, and the flowers closed their petals.

  12. All those thousands of people in Charleston had the same thing happen. We were so lucky. The clouds parted for the show here in G-town and then closed in again immediately after. Our little town couldn't have held another soul!

  13. We had a bright sunny day here yesterday, but it was only a partial eclipse for us. The lighting was very weird, and we just watched it from inside as I didn't want my daycare kids trying to look into the sun.

  14. Monday was a lovely day in Kentucky--we didn't experience the full darkness of the eclipse, but the landscape changed colors and for a few minutes the temperature dropped. [Unfortunately, it climbed again!] Today torrential rains and thunder booming.

  16. How sad with the anticipation of the kids only to be squelch by a thunderstorm! I doubt I'll be around here in 2045!

  17. We had one here a few years ago now and it was an odd experience, but not one I feel the need to repeat so I don't think you missed much! Hope your weather settles down soon.

  18. I hadn't thought about a thunderstorm during the eclipse. It was cloudy in parts, so a thunderstorm was possible. I didn't give much thought to the eclipse until it happened and we went outside and saw the shadows. It then got pretty exciting.

  19. We got a few thunderstorms during the late afternoon and thru the night. It was wonderful.

  20. Nothing like that ever happens where I live. I think I'll move!

  21. Somehow always a disappointment when weather does not behave the way we would like it to. Although one might think that we would have learned by now to kind of expect that to happen! ;)

  22. My oldest son lives in Greenville, SC, and got to see the total eclipse. He said it was such a great experience that we all decided to make a date for the total eclipse in 2024 in Buffalo, NY, where my second-oldest son lives.
