September 11

Franklin Roosevelt said that December 7 was a day that would live in infamy.  But for me it's Sept.11. We were in England when it happened.  Saw a tv set in a cafe and couldn't believe it at first, thought it was some kind of an accident and then the second plane hit.
Our daughter was living outside of Washington D.C. and I was so worried about her, took forever to get a phone call through to her.
We weren't scheduled to leave England for a while, but we contacted Delta and they said that once planes were allowed to land in the States again that they would book us.
I felt numb, couldn't stand looking at the pictures.  Every time a plane flew overhead I was nervous.  When we got to our flight I stared at anyone who looked the least bit different. It was a long flight home to California.
I'm better now, we still travel a lot, have even flown on Sept.11, but I'll never forget that day.  Our flag flies today and every day.

  2. I cried just reading your post. I am forever changed by that day. We totally changed our lives within 6 months of that day. New state, new jobs, new home. It really made us realize life is too short.

  3. It was one of those days in one's life where you will never forget where you were, like the day President Kennedy was assassinated. I also remember how eerily silent the world was with no planes in the sky and then feeling like running away every time one went over when they returned to flying.
On a happier note, I got some very inexpensive flights to England and Europe on 9/11 for a few years when no one wanted to fly on that date. My theory was because it was 9/11 security would be at a peak and it was probably one of the safest days to fly.

  4. We found that too, cheap flights on 9/11. This year we're traveling on 9/12.

  5. A day I will never forget either. It was just so sad and so hard to believe. We put the flag up then too and have kept it up.

  6. So many sad memories go back to this day. Thinking of all the families that have lost loved ones. x

  7. I think it is one of those days that will live in our memories for ever - like the day on which JFK was assassinated. We saw Ground Zero when it was cleared and empty - the horror still hung over it.

  8. How dreadful it all was. You must have been so upset to see it all whilst you were out of the country and then the worry of getting home and for your daughter too. I remember watching it unfold on television and not quite believing what I was seeing:)

  10. My sister and her family live in the DC area. Her children were young at the time it happened (9 and 7 years old). I remember them telling me how eerily quiet it was outside. No planes other than fighter planes were flying. I think those close to the situation might have been more affected than those further away, though we were all affected one way or another. At the time we were in Montana, but I remember just thinking of the horror of it all. I do remember people uniting together, churches packed, people flying their flags, etc.

  13. It was such a tragic day - so horrifying. I watched it live on television, too and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I remember how eerie it was to only see fighter planes in the skies for days......I had nightmares of plane crashes for months, but I can only imagine the grief of those who lost loved ones in this tragic way. xx Karen

  14. We were in the departure area of Athens airport when the news came through. We didn't see the pictures and I avoided them after we got home and knew what had happened.
