Beaches

There was a time when we were beach people.  When we lived in Germany, in areas that didn't have much of a summer, we'd head to Spain once or twice a year to the Costa Brava to soak up sun and get some vitamin D.  Our daughter hated the open water, took one look at the Med, asked if there were any sharks or killer whales and refused to go in.  She's never been much of a beach person.  We did entice her in when we went to Greece, she was older and willing to put up with the odd sea creature.  We always burned to a crisp, no one used sunscreen back then.
We also went to the beach in Holland, boy was that cold, but then any time we went to the beach in California the water was always cold.  The Atlantic is  much warmer.
We've also gone to Hawaii a couple of times.  Love the snorkeling, but the beaches were just ok.  Those in Mexico around Cancun are much prettier.
We've done some beach walking in Florida on Amelia Island at Fernandina Beach, but no swimming.
Those days are gone, I no longer lay on sandy beaches, my dermatologist would have a fit no matter how much sun screen I used.  If we go to the beach now, and we do go occasionally, it's to walk along the edge, soak our toes, look for seashells and for Mac to look for shark teeth.  I not only wear a big hat I've been known to carry an umbrella.
Are you a beach person?

  1. Providing I can sit in the shade on a comfortable chair I'm happy to stay on a beach for hours. Gone are the days when I would stretch out on a towel and soak up the rays. We are 3-4 hours drive away from the coast so only visit the beach when we are staying away from home.

  2. I love walking along beaches in all weathers and seasons but not much of a one for lying in the sun, I don't mind sitting
on a beach with the sand between my toes and a good book to read but I have to wear a hat:)

  3. I used to love the beach. Now, I'm far from the shore. Any shore.

  4. No doubt we'll go to the beach on our next Italian trip as the grandchildren are wanting to do that, but I much prefer a day out having a picnic in the mountains to doing the same on the beach. However, I do find the action and sound of the waves, the salty smell of the sea and a paddle in the water relaxing.

  5. I grew up near the coast. My husband used to be a surfer. Our second date was to the beach...the day after we saw Jaws (as a new release in the theater). LOL I've never really been a summer person, so my favorite time to go the beach is in the winter when it's empty.

  6. I'm an ocean person more than a beach person these days. Granted I don't live by the ocean these days either :) Growing up in Southern California, we were at the beach a lot and we lathered ourselves with baby oil and got burnt and then tanned so very deeply that I'm not sure why I don't have skin cancer these days. Never ventured far into the ocean. Didn't like the thought of jellyfish or seaweed, but enjoyed tanning on the beach. After we got older and returned to the ocean area, enjoyed being by the ocean, walking the dog alongside it, but rarely went onto the sand (actually never) but a sunset over the ocean.......Wow! I miss seeing the ocean, but I don't miss the beach. If that makes sense.

  7. I love to walk on the beach and maybe play with the Grandchildren for awhile but I am not a sun worshipper where I would sit on the beach to catch rays. I find the waves mesmerising particularly when there is a storm.

  8. Gone are the days of beach walking for me although I didn't ever visit many and certainly not too many abroad. I would love to have your past experience of them.

  9. I'm not a lying-on-the-beach person but I'm definitely a walking-on-the-beach person. Also picnicking on the beach (cuz everyone knows, food tastes better with sand in it!). We walk just about every other day, early before the sun is dangerous. We need our "vitamin sea"!
I loooove Mac's new painting in your header!

    1. You live much closer to the beach than we do, we're at least an hour from Tybee. But we're going down to St. Mary's in September to visit Cumberland Island and it has a fantastic beach.

  10. You would love the seafront in Eastbourne in England! There is a very long seafront walk. There are no hotels ON the beach, they were all built across the street from the beach, so there is nothing to spoil the seaviews! I also cannot take the sun, couldn't even do so when I was young. I did however, try to get a bit of a tan, only because I am so white, I just try to come up to a color that makes me look human and not like a zombie! LOL.

  11. Yes, I am a beach person. Unfortunately, I did not put that question on the questionnaire before we got married. HaHa... No questionnaire, but I wasn't aware my dearest doesn't care for the beach or getting sand between his toes. However we did have a Church in Santa Barbara, CA for 6 years, and me and the kids spent many wonderful hours on the beach during that time.

  12. I am but find it hard to get there due to time constraints. I used to lay out in the sun all the time, no wonder I am so wrinkled. Now I try to keep out of direct sun but still love to see the sea.

  13. I love the beach but only get to go to one if we vacation at one. On my summer list of things to do is to visit a beach around here. We will have to drive at least 45 minutes and the beach will probably be a reservoir. Not an ocean. I don't usually swim in the ocean but I love it. And I stay in the shade and lather on sunscreen. We just got back from Puerto Morales a couple of weeks ago. About 20-30 minutes from Cancun. I loved it.

  14. no. no beaches for me. Grew up by Bodega Bay in Northern California and the water is freezing. I burn too easily for beaches.

  15. I like walking on beaches, but for some reason we never visit beaches a whole lot. It's one of those, "...we live here, we can go any time we want..." so we never go. Well, sometimes we go - when we have visitors.
