UGH

I have been ordering
books hrough eBay lately, fairly reasonable a r I read a lot, 157 books last year.  Well this box came in and when Mac came in the back door I could smell ii-----  cigarettes.  It was so strong we couldn't keep it in the house.  So the box is in the garage.  I use to be a smoker, many years ago (37 years ago) and I knew they smelled, but I had no idea how bad .  I feel bad that I ever smoked  Hope the books lose their sme
.

    1. I've never smoked, but oddly kind of like the smell of cigarette smoke. I think because my dad and best friend smoked, and that and the sound of a lighter trigger endorphins or something. But 'fresh' smoke is totally different from the overpowering stench of stale smoke. :)

  2. Joeh: me too! I still crave them and it has been 9 years (I quit pre-surgery back in Nov 2009, surgery was Feb 2010 and again July 2010) and I still miss smoking. I do. And I still crave them every day.

I think the baking soda might be the easiest solution, but the others look effective, too. Good Luck!

  4. Oh, dear. Don't know how to get rid of it, but hope you do.

  5. Maybe you should just send them back? I hope it's just the box that smells. What a disappointment.

  6. I once got a mattress that reeked of cigarette smoke. It was a brand new mattress, made in a local factory, and otherwise a perfect mattress that lasted us a long time. But they must have smoked in the factory while they made it. I aired it out, sprayed it with Lysol, put fans on it during the day, etc. It took about two weeks to get rid of the smell. Ugh. I wonder if open containers of baking soda, placed in the same box with the books, might absorb the odor.

  7. My son gave up smoking at the New Year. He replaced it with vaping, but he says his cough is much better, and the smell doesn't bother others. Just hope that in ten or twenty years they aren't telling us how dangerous vaping is. I hope he uses it as a bridge to not needing nicotine. He does say that he has cut way down, because with vaping you can take one inhale as wanted, rather than with cigarettes where once you start a cigarette you feel like you have to finish the whole cigarette rather than waste it. Sorry to go on and on. I'm very happy about this change. :)

  8. What a shame, hopefully baking soda may help.

  9. I gave up smoking in 1988 and everyone said how much better the house smelled. I was thinking of buying some second hand books but perhaps I shouldn't.

  10. Oh dear! I do hate it when that happens. The smell seems to linger and if you're not a smoker it seems really strong. I used to be a smoker a lot of years ago. I hope you can get rid of the smell!

  11. Totally understand. I quit smoking over 40 years ago and know how unpleasant that smell can be. I had a friend whose daughter was a buyer for a big dept store so she was always mailing me boxes of cosmetics, lotions and perfumes. Yes, the box and contents reeked of cigarette smoke and had to stay out doors for days. Good luck.

  12. Same here. I was a smoker many years ago and never knew how bad it smelled. One of our neighbors smokes. Occasionally she will send us something and it smell so strong, even the grocery bag it's in smells awful. I hate I ever smoked too.

  14. Ugh indeed! I never smoked myself and never liked the smell... In my youth smoking was still allowed in offices where I worked, I had to change clothes as soon as I got back home and hang the day clothes out on the balcony to air... When I was around 35 I got asthma and started coughing as soon as anyone was smoking near me, for example in restaurants or whatever. Nowadays, though, indoors smoking is prohibited here in all public places. And soon to be banned even from outdoor tables at cafés and restaurants.
