Five on Friday

How did it get to be Friday already!  I'm joining in with Amy at Love Made My Home and others for this week's Five on Friday.

This week the colors of autumn are starting to show up, at least on my front steps and door.  Love the color of the chrysanthemums.  The bear, well he  said he had nothing better to do than hang around the door.

Next is a glass pumpkin Mac gave me for Christmas last year.  Great shape and color.

This week I've been reading, as always.  The first is The Company by Robert Littell, a really interesting story about the CIA, covering about 50 years of the Cold War.  The second is The Black Dog  by Stephan Booth, a murder mystery set in the Yorkshire area, it's the first of a series.  I'd seen it recommended by several people and I'm enjoying it, I like police procedurals.  And last I'm reading Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, a book on faith, it's told by an elderly minister writing for his young son, a truly beautiful book.

We watched an old favorite this week Lost in Austen it never fails to make us laugh.

And last, but not least it was 66º when we got up this morning and I wore jeans on our morning walk, that's the first time I've had long pants on since probably April.  So truly, autumn must be on its way.

That's my 5, use the button and check out all the others who are doing 5 on Friday.

  7. Thanks! I immediately whipped out a notepad to write down Stephen Booth's name. He sounds right up my alley. I should probably read The Company as well. My father was a Soviet analyst for the CIA.

  8. Love the bear and the glass pumpkin. I enjoy Stephen Booth's books as much as I do Elly Griffiths's - reading them in order is a good idea as you get the characters and relationships of the leading characters as they develop. We thought Lost in austen was great and funny too:)

p.s. yes the red toadstools are poisonous!

  14. Wearing jeans, shoes and socks today for the first time since returning from Ireland. It's chilly enough for a fire! I might look for that Black Dog story, I need something new to read. I hope the rain didn't affect you this weekend.

  15. Thanks for the advice about flying out for a Danube cruise. The trouble is that there is then the long walk at both ends for the airport departure gates. Yes, I know I could ask for a wheel chair but I am too stubborn for that and refuse to do anything other than walk with my trusty stick - which means quite slow walking. And of course, as soon as we join up with a group (we always go with Titan) then I have to keep up to their pace (or become a pain)

  16. I too wore jeans this week instead of cropped jeans as there is a nip in the air. I'd love to visit America in the Fall x

  17. I love your glass pumpkin. So different, and good for fall, Halloween, AND Thanksgiving. Your front door looks pretty and brightens up the gloomy weather that seems to go on and on. I do like the relative coolness, though! I hope you are staying high and dry in all this rain.

  18. Stephen Booth is very good - I've read a lot of his books. Another good author to look out for, my favourite is Phil Rickman, who sets his crime/supernatural novels in the Welsh/English borders. Very atmospheric and written true to the area (which is also my neck of the woods). 'The Wine of Angrls' is the first in the Merrily Watkins adventures and if you take to him there are lots of books in that series.
And, I love the sweet glass pumpkin!
