Books, Books and More Books!

Lazy, lazy day, so I thought I'd talk about books. One of the reasons I retired is so I could spend more time reading. I've always read a lot, going through 4 or 5 books in a week sometime. And through the years I've read just about everything, and every genre, except Russian novels, I draw the line there.
Retiring to a small town I quickly worked my way through the local library and have since turned more than ever to Amazon. I pay Amazon $75.00 a year and they ship things to me free in 2 days. So Brown (UPS) and I have gotten to know each other rather well.
I like a wide variety of books, thrillers ,convuluted whodunits, science fiction, fantasy, family dramas, YA, spy stories, police procedurals, some biographies, historical novels, but seldomly romances, though I love a good romantic novel, it's just that not many good ones are written
Without a doubt my favorite book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, can't remember how many times I've read it and will read it again. Jane knew people! And if there has been written a better hero than Darcy I haven't read about him.
The last book to make me cry was The Time Traveller's Wife, great, great story. They're making it into a movie and I don't want to see it, my imagination has already filmed it.
In Fantasy I'm reading George R.R. Martin's Ice and Fire Saga ( should he ever finish the series). HBO is filming this one and I will watch it.
Another Fantasy series I'm reading is The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. He died in 2007 without finishing the series and his widow has found someone else to finish it.
I've recently started a 3 book series by Penny Vincenzi, a British author, about the Lytton family. The first book No Angel begins in 1909, the next book Into Temptation picks up the story in the 30's and the last Something Dangerous (which I haven't started yet) begins after World War II.
In YA I read the Twilight series which was ok, probably would have been better if I were 13 or 14, but I was curious about the series.
Haven't read any good mysteries, but I'm always on the lookout for one.
I have 2 books going now: Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler (I think she's an amazing writer), it's Science Fiction and Deep Dish by Mary Kay Andrews (Southern humor). I recommend both of these authors, very different, but worthwhile.

  1. Have you tried half.com? That's where I buy most of mine and those the kids just have to have NOW. Stevie and Shea loved the Twilight series, and I just couldn't get into it. Pride and Prejudice is on my list for this summer.
